The Dark Side of Hinduism: Aghori: Human Flesh Eaters

India is a land of various sect and religions. Out of its vastness of belief, the sect known as Aghori or Aghori sadhus (sadhu means sage) is unique. Aghori Sadhu is associated with cannibalism and rituals using human skulls and animal sacrifices.Aghoriss are distinguished from other Hindu sects by their alcoholic and cannibalistic rituals. Aghoris in India are beyond human imagination with their rituals and mysterious practices. (Warning: These videos in this page contain images that some viewers may find distressing.)

Aghoris eat left over from human dead bodies on the banks of river Ganges. They drink in a bowl made of human skull. They apply ash from the human pyre. They are the followers of Hindu God – Lord Shiva, they are the “Aghoris”. A place considered dreadful by others is home for Aghoris, the Hindu cremation ground. Out of the various sect of Hindu priest, the most extreme and the most feared of all are the Aghoris. The term “Aghori” is derived from the Sanskrit word – “Aghor” which has various meanings. Aghor means not to forget or non-terrible in one perspectives. And on the other, it means absence of darkness. Agor implies a simple and a natural state of consciousness in which there is no fear or disgust. But on the contrary, the Aghoris have rituals that has seen as being disgustful and feared by common people. As for the Aghori sect, the true meaning of the termAghoriis the one who is fearless and who does not discriminate. The followers of Lord Shiva, the most powerful of all Hindu Gods and considered as a destroyer.

The practice of cannibalism, animal and human sacrifices are mostly related to tantric rites of the worshipers of the Mother goddess in any of the worship form – Kali, Dhurga, Kamakhya or Chammunda
The life of an Aghori Sadhu is not easy, to become like them one has to meditate about twelve years and complete certain rituals under the guidance of an Aghori guru in order to enhance one spiritual strength. Aghoris use woods from pyre, clothes from dead bodies, and ash of burnt bodies for the various rituals. There are certain rules one must follow to become an aghori. Firstly an Aghori must find a teacher and do what the teacher tells him to do. And Aghori must find a human skull known as “kappala”. And use only this as a ritual tool before initiation. An Aghori must apply pyre on his body to symbolically show the nature of the Lord Shiva. The final part of ritual requires eating of rotten human flesh and also meditating sitting on a dead corpse. It symbolizes the rise from Savak(human nature) to Siva.

videoAgori follows the simple rule that the universe recites in them. And they try to attain enlightenment by self-realization. Many of the Aghoris roam around naked representing the true human form and their detachment from the world of mortals who according to them live in the world of illusion (“maya” in Sanskrit). Through this they transcend human feelings of love, hatred, jealousy and pride. There are many Aghoris walking in the streets of Northern India, with their own kappla ( bowel made of human skull). They eat things like rotten food and left over food from garbage tins, animal’s fesses and animal’s urine.  They regularly perform the rituals to highest level in “agaratuva” (enlightenment). Agories belief the God exists in everything whether it is cow dunk or food.  Nothing is unholy or not auspicious for them, but everything is sacred. They gain their powers by doing things that is considered unholy or unclean by societies. They believe true Aghori should break all ties with families, friends and all earthly possessions and should live entire life at the cremation ground and eat and drink only through the human skull. They roam freely anywhere they want to, wherever they go they will find their home – cremation ground.

It may be difficult for you accept the life of Aghoris. But people are eager to find the right way to reach God.  however, religion often bounds human with these kinds of superstitious. As an Indian Christian I believe that education or a proper right understanding on God will bring the real enlightenment in their lives and brings them out of this darkness. May the God of light, ‘Yesu’ (Jesus) show the right path to reach “moksha” (heaven). Let me conclude with a Word from Bible.

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." - John 1: 3

AMEN - Fools of god..you believe 'heaven' is Moksha??The idea of moksha is too complex to be understood by blind hypocritical proselytizing fools like you.Moksha in the real sense means transcending the endless cycle of life-suffering-death-rebirth to a state where your existence ends in any form possible and you attain true peace at last, not going to heaven and living happily ever after till the end of time surrounded by imaginary angels

  9. Hi fellow brother,

I appreciate the time you have taken to write this piece. However, I wish you would not have seen it from biased eyes, but rather with the eyes of that intellect that you claim to write with.

In Hinduism, there are three main Gods: Bhrama - the creator, Vishnu - the keeper, and Shiva -the destroyer. For people (especially ones who jump to conclusions), destroyer means destruction. But to the truly knowledgeable ones, they know that destruction if the true end of the cycle of living.

Aghoris, for long, have been termed "flesh eaters". But does one know the real truth? Here they are:

    1) An Aghori is someone who is termed as the param bhakt (the noblest disciple... though this term is no where close to the true meaning) of Lord Shiva. And He is someone who is as comfortable with ghouls and ghosts, as he is with humans and animals. An Aghori is taught to get a human's skull (that has to be polished on a stone and shaped into a bowl). Then they are made to eat a piece (not the whole) of dead flesh. But do you know why? For as the true disciple of Lord, he sees not anything with the eyes of bias; for what is poison to one is nectar for the other. By eating in a skull and eating a piece of flesh, they respect the whole of creation; not painting it good or bad. Also, they apply ash on their body and wear nothing. Let any ordinary person try doing that and their skin will burn with rashes. So before concluding and "blessing", learn and then comment.

_ PS: Hope you do let this comment be seen in public.

  10. What a sad pathetic way of showing Hinduism. Do you Christians not have any good teachings to preach rather than putting other beliefs down? That shows how pathetic your religion is. If you were really on right path you won't have bad things to say about others and work on your own. None of you seem to liberated then why you talk?

  12. hinduism is science. it shows you how to increase the positive energy in your body and get rid of negativity. as for the aghoris, they do have their own style of living and worshiping God. however, as human beings, they are better than a whole lot of "civilized population". they are not greedy, they are not corrupt, they do not murder for selfish ends. such selfless qualities can save the world from destruction.

  13. Hi.
Nice piece of work, but there's something I don't understand or makes me wonder about it.. and that is the fact of playing with too many myths about Aghoris. I want to know the theology behind this sect? what makes/made them go for it?
    Why was it first formed?
According to a normal human belief it is disturbing, why is it even practiced with so many normal human being?
Besides my other questions, i want to know have you studied them yourself or is it a knowledge of someone Else's?

  14. Mr. P. Pickworth,

I'm replying to you by sending a separate comment since the "Reply" links are not working. Only a soccer hooligan or some other kind of lout will use the name of the Creator and an obscene four-letter word in two successive sentences. This is as revolting and disrespectful as any of the aghori practices being discussed here might seem to you.

  15. I mostly see people think aghoris are crazy insane and cannabals.... This is not true...they are just free from illusion of materialistic world..free from duality of good and bad...They know nothing physical in this world is permanent..they put ash on their body to show BHASHM HI SATYA HAI
. SO i think they are just elight group of spritual beings

  22. What we must appreciate is that the concept of non-duality,God is in everything no differenciation between u and me leave, anger, pride, kama focus all your mind towards Shiva.... How many religions in the world follows the concept of non-duality even shankaracharya said the same(Advaitha=non-duality)..but,in recent times so many changes brought in aghori contradictory to What kina Ram said.Kina ram is the true aghori he never thought to eat flesh or be ‘Vikrutha'
